Huntington Library Free Day

Happy Leap Year day?!  Well, we get an extra day in February anyways and some of my classmates are finally turning 10.   It must be nice to only age every four years!  Tomorrow is March 1st and that means you can reserve tickets for Free Day at the Huntington Library in San Marino.   The Huntington Library hosts a free day once a month but you must have tickets in order to go.  A limited quantity are available the first day of each month preceding the month you wish to visit so the upcoming free day you are reserving tickets for is April 5.  Tickets will be available starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow and most of the tickets are gone within minutes.  It’s like trying to register for City of Cerritos swimming classes.  Good luck!

Did you know?

courtesy of Mark Bittman

Did you all enjoy the Oscar broadcast last night?  I sure did but I have to admit that the only movies I’ve seen that were nominated for any Oscar was Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2.  And even with Rango, we had just rented it the night before.  Ahhh…life with kids.  Of course, family movie night requires popcorn and as I was making it, I realized that I had to share this really interesting idea with everyone.  Did you know that you can microwave your own popcorn in a regular brown paper bag?!!  I know!!  I couldn’t believe it either.  The things you can learn from the internet.  You don’t have to buy the pre-packaged microwave popcorn with all the artificial ingredients and additives.  Not only is it healthier but it’s also cheaper!  Win!  Win!  Woohoo!

Here’s the best recipe adapted from Mark Bittman:

Seasoned Popcorn

Makes: 4 servings

Time: About 5 minutes

Real hot popcorn is one of nature’s ultimate convenience foods. I can’t say this strongly enough: There’s no reason to use microwavable packages, no matter how “natural” they claim to be. Any popcorn can be microwaved, as you’ll see below.

Toss the popcorn with extra ingredients while it’s still warm and the seasonings will stick pretty well, even without adding any more fat. You can even cook popcorn in olive oil as long as you lower the heat as needed to keep it from burning; the flavor is delicious.

1⁄4 cup popping corn

2 to 4 tablespoons melted butter or olive oil

Salt (and other seasonings from the list that follows if you like)

Microwave Popcorn (Makes 2 to 4 servings). In a brown paper lunch bag, combine 1⁄4 cup popping corn and fold the top of the bag over a couple of times. Microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes, until there are 4 or 5 seconds between pops. Open the bag or container carefully, because steam will have built up. Toss with your seasonings and a drizzle of butter or olive oil or serve as is.

I do have to thank my husband because he’s actually the one who bought the “loose” bagged popcorn in the first place and I looked at him like, “What am I supposed to do with this?!”  After copious research (I googled popcorn), I learned about this great technique and I don’t think I will ever go back to the old way.  So okay, sometimes he’s right.  Happy Monday everyone!

Look out weekend cuz here I come!

Where a Kid can be Kid

Today my toddler and I went on a field trip to Chuck E. Cheese.  I can hear the collective groan already.  But…we’re parents and we’ll suck it up for our kids.  If you’ve never been to Chuck E. Cheese, it’s a restaurant with an indoor playground and arcade.  Actually, if you go on a weekday, it’s not too bad.  However, on the weekends, it is total chaos!   Maybe if you’re mentally prepared for it, it won’t be so bad.  Chuck E. Cheese has hosted many of my son’s birthday parties.  Why?  Because they take all the work out of planning a party and the kids love it!  Besides a party venue, they also offer some fun ideas as a reward for your children.  I know my son will be more motivated to complete his tasks if he knows there’s a trip to CEC in the horizon.  If a trip is looming in your horizon, keep an eye out for coupons in your Sunday paper.

And since we’re talking about Chuck E. Cheese, I have to mention John’s Incredible Pizza.  John’s Incredible Pizza is located in Buena Park and is Chuck E. Cheese on steroids.  They have arcade games, bowling and even rides!  The main difference between the two is that you can only gain admission into John’s if you purchase their buffet.  It’s an All-You-Can-Eat buffet so you could actually spend the whole day there if you want.

Last but not least, both of these establishments serve beer so that should numb the pain a little.  Enjoy!

To infinity and beyond…

If your kids are fascinated by outer space, you should definitely check out the Columbia Memorial Space Center.  The museum is located in Downey and they are open Tuesday through Sunday.  I recommend this for kids over 5 but they do have a small toddler play area upstairs.  Additionally, if your child is into Legos, there is a really cool Robotics Lab where you can program a robot on a Lego Mission Mars computer and test your skills with collecting, surveying and rescuing.  There are lots of hands on experiences for the little ones.

On a side note, just because I happen to love it, there’s a Porto’s bakery cafe just a few minutes from there.  Stop by and pick up some yummy food and pastries. yummm!!

Splash!

I know it’s a little early to think about summer already but right now Splash! La Mirada Aquatic Center is offering a special on season passes for $49.  If you don’t have a pool (like I don’t have a pool) and you’ll be with your kids all summer (like I will be with my kids all summer), this might be a worthwhile investment.  Admission is regularly $16.95 for adults, and $11.95 for kids so you just have to go 3 or 4 times to break even on this little venture.  My friends have told me that this place is great and not so big where you will lose your kids. They be will open May 26 through September 30.  Let me know what you decide and maybe we’ll see you there!

Adventure City

Wow!  I can’t believe how much great feedback I’ve already gotten from all you awesome parents out there!  Thank you!  Thank you!!

It’s Friday and I know some of you are starting your long weekend today.   ABC schools are open today but will be out on Monday.  If you’re looking for something fun to do, but don’t want to break the bank, check out Adventure City.  Admission is only $14.95/person and if you have AAA, you get a 10% discount.  It’s a small park with little rides, so it’s really perfect for young children.  There is also a petting zoo, arcade, and a Thomas the Train play area on site.  They will be open Friday-Monday.  Check their calendar for operating hours.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
