Summer Reading Program

Registration for the Cerritos Library’s Summer Reading program will begin on Monday, June 24th in the Art Studio.  The program will run through Sunday, July 7.  This annual event is themed “Reading is for Champions”.  This is a great program that is completely free as long as someone in your family has a library card.  Each week children track their reading requirement of 30 minutes a day and at the end of the week, they can redeem it for a prize.  At the end of the program, they are awarded a book to take home.   You can sign up online prior to going to the library to pick up the materials.

Aside from the Cerritos Library, other local libraries offer summer reading programs as well.  Both Los Angeles County Public libraries and Orange County Public libraries are running these programs with some fun events running in conjunction with them.   If that’s not enough for  you, here are some additional summer reading programs:

  • Barnes and Noble Summer Reading:  Read 8 books and bring completed reading journal to a Barnes and Noble store.  Choose a FREE BOOK from the selection on the Reading Journal list at the store.
  • Book Adventure: Free incentive program sponsored by Sylvan learning where your child can earn points to trade in for prizes.  Choose from a list of books and take quizzes to determine their comprehension of what they read.
  • Chuck E. Cheese:  Earn 10 tokens every time your child reads for 2 weeks in a row.  Just fill out the form and bring it in to claim your free token.  I’m just not sure it’s worth the headache but if you’re going there anyways, you might as well.
  • Scholastic Summer Challenge:  Read * Log In * Win Prizes–that pretty much sums it up.

The First Weekend of 2013

Happy 2013 everyone!

Welcome to the first weekend of 2013.  I hope you all had a great holiday break.  Here are some fun activities to cap off the end of winter break.

  • It’s FREE day at the La Habra Children’s museum and the theme is January Jamboree.  A day of circus style performances to celebrate the New Year in a carnival atmosphere! Children will participate in interactive performance techniques including plate spinning and juggling!
  • There’s also a free Kids workshop at Home Depot where your child can build a birdhouse.
  • On Sunday, head out to downtown LA for a double header of holiday fun.  First, the Japanese American National museum will be ringing in the New Year with it’s Oshogatsu Family Festival.  Admission is FREE all day.  There will be fun arts ‘n crafts and other fun cultural performances.  Later in the evening, head over to Olvera street to watch a reenactment of Los Tres Reyes Magos.    The Feast of Epiphany is a celebration of the day the three kings arrived at the nativity.  The three kings aka the three wise men will make a colorful procession down the street commemorating the journey following the star to Bethlehem.   Prizes, free champurado and pan dulce will be available for all the kids to enjoy and there will even be a Piñata for the kids to break.
  • If Downtown is not your thing, the Bowers museum is also having a HOLLYWOOD FILM AND FASHION FAMILY FESTIVAL.  Admission is FREE all day.

Have a great weekend!

Weekend Fun Oct. 19-21st

Howdy! Choo Choo!  No!  Abracadabra!   Just having a little fun writing my blog.  All of the events happening around town this weekend can be summed up with these one word descriptions…okay “choo choo” is technically two words but close enough.

Howdy!

Silverado Days in Buena Park: Annual carnival with games, crafts, contests, rides, food and fun for the whole family.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday at William Peak Park.  FREE admission

Choo Choo!

Depot Day at Travel Town:  Annual celebration and Open house on Sunday, October 21 from 10 am to 4 pm.  Take your train enthusiast and celebrate Travel Town with a day of special exhibits and activities for the whole family!  Admission is FREE!

Free train rides at Goat Hill Junction:  Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 3:30 pm.  Did I mention it’s FREE?

No!

David Shannon reading & book signing:  Author David Shannon, known most notably for his No, David! books will be reading and signing copies of his new book, Jangles, A Fish Story on October 21st from 1-5 pm at the Sarah Bain Gallery in Brea.  Even if you don’t get a chance to go to this event, be sure to check out the No, David! books.  My kids love them but maybe it’s because I can easily substitute David’s name with my son’s.  Your kids are probably better behaved.

Abracadabra!

Magic Show:  Magician Allen Oshiro presents a fun magic show for the whole family on Saturday, October 20 from 2-3 pm at the Artesia Library!  Also FREE!

Have a great weekend!
